Bulletin #4 Exercises for the Prevention of Foot and Leg Paralysis and CSF Flow

Summary:

The Tennant Foundation provides exercises to prevent foot and leg paralysis and enhance spinal fluid flow for individuals with adhesive arachnoiditis (AA).

Prevention of Leg and Foot Paralysis:

  • Perform daily standing exercises:

    1. Stretch arms upward (5-10 seconds, 3-4 times).

    2. Raise one knee/leg at a time (5-10 seconds).

    3. Flex ankle/foot (5-10 times, repeat several times daily).

    4. Walk with arm swings (avoid overexertion).

    5. Stand straight with legs together and look slightly upward (10 seconds).

Spinal Fluid Flow Enhancement:

AA disrupts spinal fluid flow, which is essential for nutrient delivery and toxin removal. To improve flow:

  1. Rock in a chair (5-10 minutes).

  2. Walk with arm swings.

  3. Practice deep breathing (hold breath for 5-10 seconds).

  4. Rock back and forth while standing.

Clean spinal fluid supports neurologic functions and prevents leaks.

Walking as the Main Exercise:

Walking helps prevent paralysis and enhances spinal fluid flow. Individuals with AA should take at least two short walks daily (minimum 100 feet).
